Buttacavoli Named Partner

Berman DeValerio is pleased to announce that Steven J. Buttacavoli has been promoted to the position of partner. The promotion recognizes the important contributions Steve has made to the firm’s success in prosecuting complex securities cases.

Mr. Buttacavoli, resident in the Boston office, focuses his practice on securities litigation. He has successfully litigated numerous cases that have resulted in substantial settlements for defrauded investors, including In re General Electric Co. Securities Litigation, In re BankUnited Securities Litigation and In re Alberto-Culver Company Shareholder Litigation.

Currently, Mr. Buttacavoli represents co-lead plaintiff in In re BP p.l.c. Securities Litigation. Mr. Buttacavoli has been an integral member of the litigation team from the outset in this complex case that is now at the summary judgment stage. In addition, Mr. Buttacavoli represents four Ohio pension funds in connection with an individual action, originally filed in Ohio state court, involving the funds’ purchases of BP ordinary shares on the London Stock Exchange. Mr. Buttacavoli also is one of the lead counsel in a recently-filed securities class action pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District Firefighter Pension Plan v. MDC Partners, Inc., et al.

Prior to joining Berman DeValerio in 2009, Mr. Buttacavoli worked for Boston-based defense firms, where he defended securities class actions and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement actions, conducted internal investigations, responded to criminal investigations by the United States Attorney’s Office, and advised clients in connection with legal and reputational risk analysis and mitigation strategies. Mr. Buttacavoli has also advised clients with respect to legal and ethical considerations in the context of relationships with federal, state and local governments.

While at law school at Georgetown University, Mr. Buttacavoli was a Senior Articles and Notes Editor for the American Criminal Law Review.
